Pimp fender molding removed
« on: September 06, 2009, 17:52:46 »
Two days ago I got the energy and removed the disco Pimp chrome fender molding off my 280SL. I had suspected a reason my dad put them on. I was right the left rear fender flare has rust bubbles. instead of repairing it he stock these ungodly chrome modling on. the two front were a bear because they were riveted on the back were screwed on. When I removed them there was nothing but dirt  between the fender  molding  and the chrome arches. never put his crap on your SL.

The passenger side looks great. One more item to add to the  paint  and body work restoration.

I am happy they are off .

I have to laugh. I bought my 280sl in 1999 and had it repainted in 2001. Asked painter to remove "Pimp fender molding" but he forgot to patch small bolt holes. Oh well, at least the paint is great.

While he was doing the paint work (nearly a year long process) we both noticed that the welds on the trunk floor looked like a 16 yr old shop student had done this work. Turns out it was a local Dallas, TX MB dealer back in 1980's after looking at receipts I had for car.

By the way I am a new member.

My previous car 250sl also had rust spot on the left rear fenter.  I wonder if the left rear fener is prone to develop rust?  It was located top center of the fender lip.

Yes, the rear fender lips are especially prone to rust. This is because the inner fender meets the outer fender right at the fender lip, creating a valley that can accumulate dust and moisture over the years. You can inspect this spot with a good flashlight through the inside of trunk (having removed the inner side panels in the rear).
