To Dan,
Welcome! The WikiPedia article on Belleville Illinois says there was a strong German influence there in the 19th century. Still noticeable today? That would make fertile ground for Mercedes, one might conclude.

Hi, My name is Howard and I live in Northern NJ. I am in the "process" of purchasing a 69 280SL. The car is two owner car, and is as it left the factory. I hope to complete the deal by the weekend. Car is close to perfect. is 49USD a fair price. 4 speed, with A/C. No rust, full docs... runs great. What say you?.... :)

If it's close to perfect as you describe, meaning to me at least spotless cosmetics (interior, paint, chrome etc in as-new condition) and technically as well (engine, trans, differential, brakes, etc etc etc ready for 50,000 more miles with only normal maintenance) then it's a very fair rpice, because to get any car into that shape this old would cost much more.

Hi, my name is Dante and I live in Italy. I am the new proud owner of a 1965 signal red, manual transimission, 230 SL. The previous owner imported it in Italy from the US 4 years ago. The car is very nice but like any 48 years and 64,000 (or 164,000) miles on its back it has minor problems that I'm gradually trying to fix with the help of this excellent forum. I already "stole" precious information from these pages: did the linkage tour, replaced coil, replaced points with a Pertonix-like unit, found out a distributor advance problem and a rust issue in the fuel tank. You will hear from me very often in the next future!

Hi Dante,

Welcome aboard the Group.  As you are finding out there is a wealth of information here in the Tech Manual and also questions are readily answered by members some who have worked on these cars for many many years.

Pictures are always welcomed, everyone loves to look and especially around Italy I am sure there are some fantastic photo opportunities.

When you decide to become a full member, I will send some W113SL window stickers for the Group as the Membership Officer for the Non Americas.

Dante,

The system will confirm the payment shortly and I can see the paypal payment anyway so I will try to get your window stickers and intro letter off to you tomorrow or Monday.

Your red 230SL looks lovely and I am sure you will get much enjoyment from it.

Hello Dante,

My mother's family "Gualtiere" were from the town of Borgia in the Cantanzaro Province. Their last name was changed to Quarture when they got off the boat here in the USA. There were also a lot of  Italian "Ciaffoni" relatives on this side of the family.

My brother's first name is Dante also.

Welcome Dante!

My name is Greg Whitehouse I have been a collector of Mercedes since 1975 when I drove my first 280 SE 4.5.  Love at first sight! Then driving many of their newer cars to work, and family cars.  Now, recently three years ago I bought a 71 280 SL in Chicago, and restored it in Wi Black forest.  great job, and now driving it as though it was a new car.  Still afew little things, but its a dream. Beauty, handling, all wrapped into one.  I am an electrical engineer owning my own company in China.  I travel back and forth 8 times a year.  We have also purchased some Mercedes in China; they are catching on to the Mercedes craze.
I reside in Mountain Lakes NJ and invite anyone to stop by for a chat .

Welcome to the forum Greg,

You will find this a fantastic and great forum. You will find once you become a member here for a very minimal low fee, doors like the Technical Forum open to you that may help you iron out those little wrinkles yo mentioned that still exist on your car. Great feedback can be found in the tech manual on any aspect be it electrical or mechanical on our cars.
