Notchy gear change
« on: April 10, 2024, 18:04:36 »
Just had a new crankshaft & flywheel fitted to my 250sl ZF 5 speed, now it is awkward changing gear especially notchy in first and second.
Any ideas why?

Most manual gearboxes uses a 80 or 90 grade oil. These use ATF. If the wrong oil is used you'll get a notchy shift.

ZF recommend a 75 w 80  ( Ecofluid M )  for the S5-20 which I was using prior to the new flywheel.

For those of us not familiar with the British term “notchy”, I found this:

A manual gear shifter is said to be “notchy” if it is difficult to select a gear from neutral.

Maybe it will improve after some bedding in time. Has the weather been colder than usual? Do you think the clutch is disengaging completely as it should? You could also look below for possible binding in the selector mechanism or rods.
Or try ATF, though if it was previously fine with the Ecofluid that may not change anything.

Thanks Dave, I will look at the mechanisms, I don't think it's the Ecofluid which I have been using for over 2 years. Have attached list from ZF if anybody is interested.
