Hi fellow enthusiasts
I recently purchased a 66 230SL Euro, trying to figure out the correct interior material and color. Currently it has Blue leather interior. the data card shows 220 / 1 on section 17 for upholstery. In trying to decode the info on our technical info pages, upholstery codes page shows 220 is a leather option, but the 1 on the data card should indicate MB-Tex, so I am confused, any help would be appreciate. did the car come with leather or MB-Tex? also, how do I locate leather of vinyl to match my interior?
-
Hello, the three digit code starting with 2 is leather, so 220 is blue leather. The "1" in the box after it, does it have a small "40" above it? if so then this is an option code, 401, which actually doesn't make any sense to me as option code 401 is for single seats, rather than bench seats, which Pagoda's never had. Hopefully someone may have more information on this
Regarding a source for upholstery, just search leather , using the search option above, and you'll find plenty of posts with suppliers and reviews
Good luck finding out about your (or your wife's car)

Thank you, that clarifies it, I only have a photo of the data card, so it is not very clear, but this is what I see.

So, on the other boxes to the right you have 401-single seats, 416 - hard top and soft top and 422-power steering, the remainder of the option codes 44 onwards are on the line below this

According to the “Farben in Ausstattungen” manual, (trim manual), for 230SL with build code 220, exterior including hardtop, Dunkelblau 332, with white 050 headliner, solftop, marineblau 896. The 220 also indicates that leather was Dunkelblau 5300, carpet Mittelgrau 029. There was no 220 code for MBTex. Also it will depend on your production number, because the 230 also shared 250 materials. Bob

Thanks Bob, very helpful info. Can you recommend a source to get matching leather?

I used GAHH, look on line to get their contact info. You can get color samples sent to you, just ask for the samples, everything from leather, carpet, tops and liners. Jack is the person to talk to. He is the owner, along with his father. There are several other companies out there that basically carry the same materials. Bob

"Matching" Because you only want to replace some pieces? I think most people here would recommend you replace it all to ensure it matches. New material will never match old material.
Then, if you're worried about originality, it's hard to know what "new" really looked like back then. Just get samples from many sources and choose the one you like. If you're super concerned about color shade and material texture, find some members in Washington who can help (vast personal experience, or cars with original interiors) and go visit them and their cars with your samples.

Search the forums for data card reproduction or data card reprint. A member here does a fantastic job ot it. Highly recommended!!

Thanks, will do

The car interior is fully redone and in great shape, I’m switching to white steering wheel and want the center pad to match the blue interior! Thanks for your input
-
You can do that if it's your preference, but if you prefer originality then stick with the horn pad that matches the ash tray cover and window crank inserts.

Bob,
You're not teaching anyone to fish. :)
-
Some people like to fish, some don't, some people can't fish, some people just like to get the fish quickly and eat it!
-
Not in a fishing phase of my life! Full time job and three kids, I’m in the eating phase, hoping to be in a fishing phase before I’m 65! :D

ehabs12,
Yes, to each their own - we all have our preferences and methods. I'm a fisherman. I learn a lot by searching the forums and Tech Manual wiki. I search for topic "A" and find the information, as well as a number of things tangential to the topic. It broadens my knowledge about these cars. Also, with the education gained by searching and reading, I can ask more detailed and specific questions. It's my only hobby, so I have time! :)
