General Discussion / Re: Vin number look up
« Last post by Pawel Sz on May 05, 2024, 21:31:47 »
Dear enhusiasts, I am looking to buy Pagoda after restoration. The VIN number of the car is available. According to the seller ths is EU car version. I am wodndering as this 1969 model is eqquiped with Air Conditioning (original) and is manual version.
Is anywan able to help me to verify this?
The car's engine number is 130.983.10 - which correctly corresponds to a Manual (10) 2.8 liter (130.983) car.
As for the VIN it 113.044.10. Which correctly states the car is a W113 (113) sub model 280 SL (044), left hand drive (1) with a manual gearbox (0)

Well, its in and all buttoned up - a test drive has proven that everything is A OK -gear changes are now very precise, but be assured that getting those two bushes in, for me anyway, ranks up there with installing the heater box under the dash :-\

I used a combination of hot water and silicone spray combined with a touch of brute force.
I removed the actuating rod from the tunnel and filed the edges of the forks to remove any burrs. I left the gear stick attached. I found a scrap piece of 2mm aluminium plate about 5cm x 15cm and wedged this underneath the gear shift rod (that comes out of the back of the gearbox - NOTE this should be in the fully forward position) - this formed a ramp and guide for the forks to slide up and onto the Gear shift rod. Next, I installed the two hot water-soaked bushes and held them in place with a 15cm set on vice grips - lined the forks up, sprayed the silicone and levered the shaft forward with a bit of wood that I had on standby. After a bit of wiggling of the gear lever, the forks slid forward, and I quickly installed the bolt - JOB DONE!!!

So.......thanks everyone for the suggestions, esp the hot water, - without that I don`t think the silicone spray alone would have done the job

We are getting there, warm evenings, a good drive along curvy roads. My -64 is now ready for it. Wish you all a good season for pagoda driving.

I purchased almond caulk for mine.
I have not actually finished the project.
my plan is to use the caulk as the gasket.

Really stupid question (maybe): You are aware of the fact that there are two different head gaskets for the M130 2.8L engine?

General Discussion / Re: How determine order of manufacture
« Last post by MikeSimon on May 05, 2024, 17:10:10 »
I am not sure what exactly you are alluding to but it seems you are questioning whether the sequence of VIN serial numbers also indicates the production sequence, i.e: later serial number =later production date?
It is a common practice in manufacturing (vehicle or otherwise) where serial numbers are used, to tie the serial numbers to a timeline. The main reason for this is quality control and the need to be able to identify production dates. I am pretty sure that Mercedes Benz followed (follows) that principle. The only reason for a break in this would be a failure to pass final inspection and return to rework, which could lead to an earlier serial number item being finished at a later date. Which could then also be reflected in the delivery date.
Again, really not sure what you are trying to determine. Maybe you can ask the question straight out. When was your car manufactured?

On the 15th of April, 1964, the car was twice as old as you. Now you're practically the same age. You're catching up ...

Thanks Joe and Dan.  I haven't had a chance to get back to it yet.  I work weekends...  I'll let you know what works when I get to look at it again.

I have always thought that when the car rolled off the production line, the steering wheel hub was stamped with the date.
