All,
Hope all is well.
I need some guidance of how to re-assemble the bottom of my Steering servo.
Pls have a look at the drawing, and then the 2 photos with the options.
Is it photo A or photo B?

I've never taken this stuff apart, but to help others, please state if the three parts of the assembly are:
- layed out in the same sequence, but flipped over
- layed out in a different sequence, but also flipped over

Also, is your housing(?) oriented the same as in the exploded parts diagram, or is it flipped?

Dear Rod,

Thanks for taking the effort in writing a reply.

My main question is about the sequence of the 2 shown parts, radial shaft seal and the seal ring.

My seal ring is solid steel, with a blue rubber inner lining.

If I lay under the car, I first detach the cover of the steering box, and in the cover I have the 3 rings (including the lock ring)

Now I want to know if:

1. I first install the radial shaft seal, then the seal ring and then the lock ring

2. What size is "up" for the seal ring? With the blue part on the outside or the steel edge on the outside? (see pict)

I hope this explanation is understandable

Be well,

Bart

Hi, Bart,

I'm not sure which car you have, but this close-up diagram of your parts is from my 230SL parts manual.  It clearly shows the order in your photo B (as in, Bottom photo).  The description of item 83 is Radial Seal Ring; 84 is Supporting Ring; 85 is Lock Ring.

It also seems to show the Supporting Ring with the lip pointed "up", that is into the Seal Ring (the opposite direction from your photo); that makes sense, as there would be no reason to have a lip towards the Lock Ring.

I'm not sure if this answers all of your questions, but I hope it helps.
