Hi
My hardtop has been repainted and the workshop are putting it back together. I had the chrome refurbed by a specialist but so long ago neither the workshop nor I can remember whether there were rubber gaskets or seals between the chrome and the top when it was removed. This is for a 1970 280SL.
Old age strikes! Can anyone advise please?

Hi Pierre,
I disassembled my hardtop about 3 months ago. I do not recall any "seals" (like rubber) between any chrome parts and the hardtop. However, there was a lot of what I would call sealant between them. The sealant was very hard but was most likely soft when originally applied, then hardened with age.
I used I think the SLS site for reference and if you look there, I do not think you will find rubber seals where the chrome meets the hard top. There are of course many rubber seals used but again, not in the location you reference.

Search these forums and the tech manual. Hard top seals, and assembly are well documented here.

There is a big long grey rubber thing between the hardtop chrome in front and the windshield frame on the car. At least that's how I remember mine.

Pierre,
There is and there is both an OEM and a after market rubber available. I have used both and it is not a critical area that needs the OEM seal if you want to save some money.

Thanks. I’m thing more about the chrome below the rear window of the hard top. See photo.
