Early SL Pagoda front Girling calipers
« on: February 22, 2023, 22:03:03 »
I have a pair of Girling calipers as fitted to early SL Mercedes for sale.
These have been fully rebuilt - stripped, replated and with all new seals, pistons etc.  Currently the pistons and seals are not assembled into the castings as I prefer to store these dry to preserve seal integrity etc.
They were purchased to use in an original AC Cobra, as this model used the same caliper - however the AC uses a ⅜" banjo fitting, and the Mercedes application uses the identical castings but machined to a 10mm banjo thread.  As a result these were never fitted, and are now surplus to requirements - I have never owned an SL, sadly!
I'm looking for £500 for the pair, which is pretty much the cost of the restoration work alone.
The calipers are in Cambs UK and can be posted.  Please send an email if interested or for more detailed information.

Whilst they are nice to have, I think you will be lucky to fetch anything like that price. Most cars have been upgraded at some point in their life to the later two piston caliper.

Thanks for the advice - I have no idea about these three-piston jobs, but need them gone really.  Maybe £300, anyone?

Interested at the 300 price.

I had rusty pistons and cylinders on my Girlings.  Took the pistons to a machine shop in 2001 and had them recreated in aluminum!  Put back together with fresh rubber and it lasted years.  Knowing the cylinder rust was never addressed, now I would consider buying fully restored calipers.  How can we calculate shipping cost to Ohio, USA?

Actually, those don't look like mine.  Mine are the strange 3-piston version.

Interesting - mine are 3-pot, but the photos you have posted look like Jag ones to me, with the banjo union on the top.  As I understand it (which isn't saying much), the Merc application has the banjo bolt on the rear of the single piston casting.  They're actually all the same casting (Jag, Merc, AC) but machined differently.
I think these are probably sold now, but thanks for the interest.

Roger,

I haven't seen mine in years, so i just searched and posted those pics.  Heres a pic from an old thread.

I assumed yours were 2 piston based on how they look on the "outside". You didn't state 3 piston or show it in the pics.

If you sale falls through, let me know.
