Pawel,

What do you mean?

Will it (W108) fit?

Ok all,

Mr Leo Peterssen was correct.

I drilled it out.

Now I'm waiting on the people from Haas Classics to tell me a W108 tumbler would fit.

They are the one selling one, but they had their doubts ...

All,

Good evening.

Bart from Belgium back.

After a winter working on my other restoration project (Etype, series 2, 2+2) I'm now finishing my 230SL

As you might recall I had to replace the ignition barrel (with a new key).

The first one I bought (a new one) was stuck after 10 times and I had to send it back and the nice people of SLS gave me a 100% refund, only to hear the ran out of barrels.

So I went to Niemoeller. They were able to sell me a new one.

This barrel was on my desk the entire winter (smiling at me)

I just came back from my garage after installing it back into the car.

But then ...

When I turned the key I was able to go from 0 to 2. The red ignition light turned on, but then nothing.

It felt I was not able to "reach" the ignition engine. I could not turn the key "far enough" until the moment the engine turned.

But it felt like a normal turn ...

So with this brief intro, and my explanation on what I experienced ... Who can help me?

Be well,

Bart

Hi Bart

Nice to hear from
You.  Refresh my mind…. Your car has originally a manual or automatic transmission?

If it is automatic…. There is a kind of kill switch on the firewall which verifies if the car is in neutral or parking position to allow passing the T50 signal
To the starter selenoid

Check that.

Also if it manual there is a positive signal going to the TTS at  top of the TOP of engine next to the FIP at the front that receives in one of its poles also T50 when cranking.

Maybe ignition switch is doing its thing but signal T50 is not passing through

Best Regards
Leo

Leo,

Hi, nice to see you again!

If I take the barrel from the electrical component, which is held in place by 3 crews on the back, and then use a screw driver to turn, the car starts ...

If looks like it will not turn far enough ... but does not make sense ...

Bart

If you did the screwdriver experiment without the barrel, then you are right the problem is related to the barrel position into the lock assembly.

If the barrel turns outside without restrictions, then look carefully something is in the path or not clean enough.

Best regards
Leo

Leo,

Could it be that the inanition switch is "kaput"?
