Title: steering wheel
Post by: badali on December 03, 2008, 22:54:06
When I bought my 230 SL last week I noticed It had a leather cover on the steering wheel but the threads were all out so I removed the cover.  I have seen allot with this cover,  was this a Mercedes option or a later add on?  The cover is still in good condition so I could have it sewn back on.

I think I will leave the cover off.  The steering wheel has some discoloration and minor hair line cracks but still looks good.

thelews,  Did you put the cover on it or did someone else sew it on for you?

It's a Wheelskins that I purchased from a vendor on Ebay, about $30 shipped if I recall correctly.  I installed it myself and had it made to specific measurement ( I can provide it to you off the box if you need).  It's a tedious job, but not hard.

Not a restoration, although it was repainted and a new top put on in 1975 with 100k miles on it.  Previous owner of 37 years took exceptional care of it in the 150K miles he drove it and refinished parts as they were off the car for maintenance or repair.  Interior, except for carpet on door sills is all original, as is the chrome.

I'll post the wheelskin dimensions.

The wheel covers of the era were made of a padded plastic with a wraparound color coordinated plastic strip.   The wheelskins are great.  I had one that lasted over twenty years.

Thanks, I just ordered one.  It's listed for $50 on the Wheelskins site, but $30 from them on Ebay.
I've been looking for a good cover.
