Title: 4th speed on automatic transmission stopped working

4th speed on automatic transmission stopped working. Fluid level good transmission works fine otherwise anyone have any recommendations? Do I  Need a transmission rebuild The car is a 1970 280 SL

Are you sure?
They normally start in 2nd, so only change gear twice.

What sort of RPM are you seeing at 40mph? 50?

I’m running about 3000 RPMs between 40 and 50 miles an hour

Does it also shift late and hard? There may be an issue with the kickdown solenoid or switch stuck

d guess you 3 position solenoid is stuck. Essentially your transmission thinks you are mashing the gas pedal.  Been written about a bunch here so search it and free it up.

Sometimes, just the kick-down-button on the floor gets stuck down. It's easy to check this first.
