4th speed on automatic transmission stopped working. Fluid level good transmission works fine otherwise anyone have any recommendations? Do I Need a transmission rebuild The car is a 1970 280 SL
-
Are you sure?
They normally start in 2nd, so only change gear twice.
What sort of RPM are you seeing at 40mph? 50?
-
I’m running about 3000 RPMs between 40 and 50 miles an hour
-
Does it also shift late and hard? There may be an issue with the kickdown solenoid or switch stuck
-
d guess you 3 position solenoid is stuck. Essentially your transmission thinks you are mashing the gas pedal. Been written about a bunch here so search it and free it up.

Sometimes, just the kick-down-button on the floor gets stuck down. It's easy to check this first.
