Post by: Brennie on June 27, 2021, 09:00:26
Hi …I’ve just had my SL230(all chrome) mirror rechromed..all good but, the actual mirror glass is shot…can I get a replacement? I hear it’s smaller than 250/280s…also,the little black plastic flipper/ dipper thing snapped..fatigued I guess,..can these be found ,or failing that reglued together some how?
Thank you all in advance..

As I am not the one doing it, it’s easy to ask: would this be a good candidate for 3D replica manufacturing?

Hi,
I haven't seen the "flipper" for a 230-rearview mirror but the later versions have a thin sheet metal inside to realize a stable flip mechanism.
Will this be possible with 3D-printing?

It’s been a while since I disassembled mine to clean the glass (there was an ugly kind of rusty patch on the inside which went away with a careful but thorough cleaning). I think I remember actually dropping the small metal spring in that plastic ‘flipper’ as I was reassembling the unit, putting it back in and finding it all worked fine after. So if I remember correctly the metal spring can be inserted into the black plastic flipper afterwards.

In all likelihood the mechanism or "flipper" is the same as sedan's of the era.  I doubt Mercedes would go through the expense of "reinventing the wheel."

I trying to get the glass resilvered but that little thing just snapped as I was reassembling the whole thing.. I could try to epoxy it I guess.. taking apart another old mirror might be an option too… it would mean sourcing one then, taking it apart in the hope it’s the right shape and fit… which is ok if it’s only a few £s but…. It’s a Mercedes…
