Mike ,would you mind advising me ,with my tool kit,
it has 5 spanners 4 are Dowidat and 1 is a Walter, see in photo 13x17
should this also be a Dowidat , as i have never seen a 13x17 Dowidat
for sale -----is there such a size.
i have---8x10
11x13
14x17
17x19
and the Walter is 13x17--thankyou.
-
Dowidat never made one with the Mercedes Branding that I've ever seen. Mercedes added 13mm bolts and nuts sometime in the late 1960's, perhaps at the 250SL or 280SL change. I am not sure if they discontinued the 14mm. I'd have to ask Joe or someone more experienced than I. Earlier kits did not include a 13mm wrench.
So it depends on your model year. Every kit I provide has a 5th wrench, the Walter 17x13.
If you have it, it can't hurt.
Let me know if you have any questions. I browsed the model year changes chronologically, and couldn't find the crossover date.
Regards,
Mike

The wrenches in my 1966 230SL have Mercedes Benz on one side and Dowidat on the other. One is a 10X13 wrench. I think these are the ones that came with this car but since I have had more than 10 Mercedes, I could have mixed them up at some time.
I also have a Mercedes Benz/Heyco 13X17 wrench in my tool box (not in the 230SL). Not sure where or when it came from.
-
Thank you Mike for that information.
-
MB Paul:
Wayne's set is Standard issue in all the kits I'm aware of.
8x10
11x13
14x17
17x19
Who the heck knows where the 10x13 is from...
The more I learn, the more confused I look.

Just to confirm , photos to show.
If any body has a Dowidat din895----13x17 i will gladly
swamp it for my Walter din895------ 13x17---its my odd ball
one in my kit, and ill pay shipping. regards.

I will check my inventory when I get back to the house.
Update, I have only one 17X13 and it is branded Walter.
-
I've got 100 of these mercedes marked wrenches, and the only 17x13's are the Walters. Good Luck in finding one. If I ever see one, I'll let you know.

Sudden interest for these 13x17 wrenches? ???
They were never part of the tool rolls delivered with our Pagoda cars from factory.

As mentioned before, the M8 hardware was changed in the DIN industrial norm in 1965. Before that, M8 had a 14mm hex (nuts and bolt heads). After, this was 13mm.
So, the entire industry, including automotive of course, started using 13mm key width. More nimble, and some less weight in a machine too.
14mm wrench ends (14x17) were indeed retained and needed in the M-B tool kit, because some fittings on the car have this size even after 1965.
-
Heyco made 17x13 wrenches for Mercedes as MB Paul wrote. The longer black 350 pre-Pagoda and later shorter DIN 895 models.

Alfred you are a Champion, many thanks for that,
send me another PM, as i messed up the last one----regards Wayne.
-
Sent you another one with the link.
Let me know if you have problems.
-
Hans,
I have seen supposed "original" 280SL tool kits, and they did indeed have the Walter wrench in them. I don't think most owners would go out and try to find one if the kit didn't have one.
Thanks for the input on the 14mm vs 13mm timing.
Regards,
Mike

Many Thanks Jonny B, Mike, and others, especially Alfred
for finding a Dowidat 13x17 wrench for me, from Germany.
-
Forgot to mention ---Mike and Hans----You are correct re the wrench,
this one does not have the word Mercedes on it, has,
13x17 Dowidat------Germany, on one side, and the other side is
13x17 Din 895------standard material with a very smal 1/4 inch circle at end.
But im happy to obtain it, can send photo later if wanted, regards .

I can always add and muddle the picture a little:
I have several 17x14 Wrenches. Matador, Heyco and Dowidat. They ALL say Mercedes Benz on them. Including the Dowidat
I also have a 17x13 Walter.
And a 14x11 Dowidat. Again, all Mercedes Benz
-
Walter 17x13
-
Dowidat 14x11
-
I searched the Tech Manual and all my records for a list of the correct on-board tools in the kit for a 1970/71 280SL and could not find anything.
Does anybody dare to post the complete list?
-
Never mind fellas! The memory is the first to go. ::) Looking through my records I found a complete thread about this from 2 years ago which I printed out!
-
Would you mind posting link? i was about to start looking for it...

This looks like it has a 17-13 Dowidat and a 14-11??

To continue to beat the dead horse: My lugwrench has the same part-number as most others that I have seen, i.e.: 120 581 02 46. HOWEVER, it does not have the flattened handle end (to remove the hubcap, I suppose). Could it be that the Bundt wheel cars did not have that?
-
Mike, maybe some clues here: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=27173.msg194861#msg194861

That's it. Thank you, Pawel!

The questions do not end :o: On my hunt for original 300 Heyco Pliers (Wasserpumpenzange) I keep seeing a black "Walter" piece. What model(s) was this supplied for?
-
I believe these were for the early cars, like the 300 SLs, 190 SLs, some pontons.
Here is a like to an excellent source on tool kits for the early cars:
http://www.mbzponton.org/valueadded/maintenance/toolkit.htm
If you follow the first link it leads to a pdf of a detailed explanation of the kits.

Correctamundo JonnyB!
