Original Paint thickness

After searching these forums, I could only find one topic about original paint thickness on 113's. The numbers seem incorrect. Does anyone know what the approximate original paint thickness, including primer, was when these cars left the factory?

It is probably different between solid colors and base coat/clearcoat metallic paints. Then again, newer paint compositions are so superior to the ones used back then, that I cannot see any value in trying to duplicate the original as long as the color matches.

Sorry for the confusion, I'm not trying to match paint, I just wanted to find the approximate original paint thickness when these W113's left the factory.

I have no way of actually measuring the thickness of my 050 original paint but I know it is pretty resistant to stone chips as there are none on the front of the car. The car is scratch free but I did have have a small scratch years ago from a slight Misadventure when lowering the hardtop and touching the car with the pointed end of the “drip” trim which resulted in about a .5 scratch. You could feel it with your fingernail and I was able to repair it myself with a touch up paint that was available from MB at the the time.

I think the thickness of paint on your car be easily measured with the ultrasound paint thickness meter that is widely available and does not cost too much (a must have when buying a car on your own, I think. The trouble is - I believe the paint coat on your car mighty have worn off through years and you would have to compare it with nominal value.
Touchpaint pencils are still available for many colors at MB.

I believe original paint would be 4-7 mils in thickness. More on horizontal surfaces, less on vertical.
