I’m in the process of ordering parchment loop carpeting (beige 8003) for my 71 with a manual shift.
How were these sets originally finished off. In the same color vinyl trim or in a contrasting shade of beige? Also around the stick shift... is there a rubber grommet or trimmed in vinyl or what. Top stitch or blind stitched? I don’t have the car at my home right now so I can’t check it out in person. I want it as close to original as I can get.

I suggest you look at original sales literature for our W113 Pagoda cars. Nice colour renderings there to answer your queries.
If you do not have access to the printed material; perhaps you can look in Gerster's website: http://oudemercedesbrochures.nl/Engels_index.html (http://oudemercedesbrochures.nl/Engels_index.html)

Ireppond,
There are two rubbers required to finish off the hole in the carper around the gear lever.
Nr 1 is about a 4 inch rubber ring which is sewn into the carpet. Note, if I am correct the lever is not exactly in the middle of the tunnel, it is slightly over to the left.
Nr2 is a rubber boot that fits over the gear lever and into the rubber ring discussed above.
Regards
Chris

Is that round carpet rubber grommet still available? I have an automatic and would love to get my hands on one if they are out there.

Bill,
the round rubber grommet is still available (https://www.authenticclassics.com/RUBBER-GROMMET-CARPET-AT-SHIFTER-230SL-250SL-280SL-p/auth-005155.htm)
but it does not fit around an automatic shifter console.
