Poll- Favorite color combo for the Pagoda?
« on: September 27, 2004, 12:24:47 »
I would like to here about your opinion on what you think is the "perfect" color combination for the 113.  Please mention the color name and it's code.  If you do not know the code I'm sure some of our members will be able to assist.

I thought this might be a fun way of learning color codes and hearing your opinions on what you think looks good. :D

I'd have to vote for 050 white exterior and 132 maroon interior.  Maybe because that's what mine is.

My dad has a 69 blue metallic but I don't know the color code w/ parchment interior.   Very nice...

Dana, what shade of blue is it? Light blue would possibly indicate DB 906. One of my personal favorites.  Or is it a medium or dark blue?

Anyone know if the maroon is available?  Last time I checked GAAH they had discontinued it. :(  :(

Hands down--ivory exterior with deep red interior.  It's a classic color combo that Mercedes used for years.  Check out the cover of the latest issue of "The Star."  It features the 300sl with, yes, ivory exterior with red leather.
Silver with black leather makes my heart beat also.

I am attracted to the blue metallic colors.  See the attached file.  The top is DB363.  Bottom is DB906.  I prefer the darker blue, but either color with Parchment (off white) interior is spectacular.

That's great info Don! I'll have to call GAAH and find out why they have discontinued it.  As for silver and balck, it's a very sharp color combo!

I recently saw a white with black interior and black hub caps that looked very nice!

I'm a purist. I'm still partial to the color that is synonymous with Mercedes' racing cars: DB 180G, aka silver-grey metallic.

I don't own a silver Pagoda anymore, but if I did, I think I'd be tempted to fit an ivory wheel along with blue tartan plaid cloth inserts in the seats in a nod to our big brother, the 300 SL.

my vote is for the silver 180 exterior and black or red interior.  It is both classic Mercedes and very classy looking....my 69 280 is a correct factory 2 tone with 180 exterior with 542 (dark red)hard top and hub cap color, and the red interior......very very sharp looking car

While I don't have a favorite color combo, I thought I'd add that some interior pieces are only available in black today...so if you are restoring a car, keep that in mind.  That's whey I have a black interior!!

I just gutted the interior and an underwent a bare metal respray of my 280sl. I love the combination of brilliant silver and red leather interior.

I figured as long as the car was stripped to the metal I may as well make it a color I like. (while trying to stay historically accurate)

The first Pagoda I ever saw back in the 60's was white with a green interior and matching dark green hardtop. This became my ideal of a Pagoda for several decades and I never saw another one like it.  Fifteen years ago I first saw the car that I now own and fell in love with the color combination.  It is the only Brown Pagoda that I've ever seen with a Cream interior that goes perfectly with the Light Beige hardtop and hubcaps.  Every other one I've seen has had a more saddle colored interior.

This is not an opinion, it's a fact.

The best looking car for elegance, sophistication, and downright beauty is (don't argue) Tobacco Brown with Cognac interior.  Exterior:423; Interior:140; Brown Carpet; Beige Soft top 745.

This just happens to be the colors of my car, merely a coincidence.

By actual statistical survey at car shows, when arrayed near other Pagodas, passers-by say 2 to 1, "I like your color better."

I can supply sworn affidavits for this if needed. Also many comments like, "What a great color, and "Oh, I like that color"

If you want to be jealous, click on the link below. Go to the bottom of the link page for a photo of the beauty.  I've got it!

Mike Hughes says,

........and when I got my DB050 car it had green carpets (non original) but black interior and black hardtop. I changed the carpets to black but felt the black hardtop was a bit dull so I painted it dark green !!

It's a very amateurish job as I use it max for about 2 months in the year, but the combination is excellent looking. I will eventually get the entire car painted and keep the combo. I'll try to post some photos.

Probably too dark to see the colour !

Well Richard...you are entitled to your "facts", and you've almost got them right....but I'm afraid the exterior really should be 501  "winerot" or burgandy, like a fine wine instead of chocolates, though 834 Moss Green Metallic is a close second. Of course I have it on the greatest authority that this is the best color combo.....my wife :D

My 1971 280SL is Cinnamon with Parchment interior, and it gets raves everywhere, in spite of quite a few paint chips.
I think an interesting poll would be "why did you buy the car you own?" Color would be a possible answer, of course. On the other hand, I think a lot of guys and gals have just fallen in love with their car and for that reason, think their color is the best.
Personally, I think picking the best color combination is like picking the most beautiful girl at an international beauty competition; they're all wonderful, each in her own special way.
Now, no one has mentioned the combination of my late 450SL: Brown with olive drab interior. That was simply terrible.

I always thought silver, signal red, and beige-grey metallic colors were extremely appealing.  My early 250SL looks pretty good in it's original dark-blue with parchment interior.  It's a somewhat rare color, and also highlights the chrome details quite well.

Wow !  that Passerelli car is magnificent !

I LOVE the anthracite with the red, definitely my favourite... and the other, is it black, with the red ?

In this months "Mercedes Enthusiast" magazine there is a small feature about Mercedes cars at the Nurburgring and on it there is a small photo of a georgeous 113, which the author says looked like it was set up for track use. Anyway the car was spotless, red, with the bundcake alloys, but they looked different, like a wider rim (they never made 15" did they) and it also has lowered suspension. Very purposefull but what caught my eye was it appears to have bright red carpets and the whole thing looked very racy..........really reminded me of the 300SL's

Yes, but......my 280SL is 571 red metallic with a cognac interior. This is a nice combination and is growing on me, but the best color on a 113 has to be the beige-grey or beige-grey metallic, with a cognac or brown interior. It is beyond elegant. It just drips class. (sorry, Klasse). Others I think are up there: black with dark red interior, moss green metallic with cognac or bamboo, ivory with red or dark red. I'm not crazy about the baby blue or the bright red, but I have seen sterling examples of each that I would have loved to own. Incidentally, a friend of mine has a 71 6.3 that is beige-grey with cognac and burl walnut woodwork that may be the best looking 6.3 on the planet. And, no, he won't sell it- I tried. My 6.3 is moss-green metallic with black, another nice combo, but it does make the AC work hard.

Actually that looks like the actual car featured !

I think it looks great, the rims appear to be polished !

Not much chance of finding a 600 around these parts !!  I wonder if you could use the 15" steel wheels and hubcaps and a low profile tyre ?

If it was Christmas morning, and I went out to open the garage and found a perfectly restored 230SL, these would be my picks:

1. White w/blue (what can I say? -- I'm attached!)
2. Signal Red w/ Black
3. Dark Green w/Cognac
4. Midnight Blue w/oyster (parchment?)

My vote goes for midnight blue with parchment interior, very elegant. There is also a beautiful metallic kelly green that I always fall in love with cognac hides. My current car is light blue with dark blue interior.  I am really thinking about changing this color combination to midnight blue with parchment interior.

Not that I'm biased or anything, but my all-original unrestored Horizon Blue (304) '64 230SL with Parchment MB-tex (121) is the most beautiful I've ever seen. Soft top (number 723 on the datacard option list) is the original Navy Blue (896), as are the rocker panels at the bottom of the car for those interested in originality - they weren't all black!

Now if I could just find a correct lid for the ashtray...

Nice car. My mother has an MB sedan of that vintage in horizon blue, so I know it well. Always liked it.

As luck would have it, I believe someone is selling a used ashtray with that exact color lid. Check the "For Sale" section in the forums.

Alternatively, you could buy a new ashtray with a black lid and either disassemble the top and insert a matching piece of Tex, or you could simply re-dye the black Tex in there. Either would work.

Hi Guys,

OK,here's a stumper to me.  My Datenblatt says my paint colours should be 268/268 (that's in the way the Lackierung section reads for UT/OT).  That is, Dark Green.  The trim number is 131, which should have been black, but 131 does not list Dark Green as one of the acceptable paint colours.  There is a 740 black soft top listed.  The hard top must have been black? or green?  Hunh?

Someone repainted everything Signal Red--another clue to the colour mystery (besides the Datenblatt) came when we lifted out the shifter cover and found blue--yes, metallic blue!

Any surmises, surprises, and theories will be entertained...

France,

Sounds like more than one color change over the years. If the usual poking and prodding in and around the dash doesn't reveal anything, I'd look underneath the car. There's a plate under the transmission that should give more insight into original color. My bet is that yours is green.

Brian Peters shows a photo of part of it in the following link:

http://www.motoringinvestments.com/images/Resto_Log/trans_supp1.jpg

(The part may be caked with decades of dirt and oil, so be prepared to do a little archaelogical work with a degreaser.)

Mind you, I have seen restorations where every last bit of a car's previous color have been eliminated. It's pretty rare that someone will go to that length though.

Let us know what you find out.

My Datenblatt is also 268/268; Blaugrun body and top.  Mine should have a 747 green soft top.  Look for interior color under the dash and the rear panels for original color.  Also check the vin number on the frame under the intake manifold to cross check your number for correctness.

My car silver db 180 silver with red interior, sort of a classic MB color combo.  But I love the color of Hauser's car -- grayish, brown, taupe color.

Is that the same as the car wax ad showing a pagoda...swiss something, I believe.

Yeah, that's the interesting part--no clue at all to previous colours, not inside the engine bay (all red, the current colour), not inside the dash, not under the car.  Just the strange metallic blue under the shifter cover!

All the engine and chassis numbers match all the metal badges--the Datenblatt is clearly correct.  But it must have gone from green to metallic blue to signal red with someone very meticulous at the wheel!

Hello Aussie230,

By the way, as your VIN is 006985 a new ash-tray with black lid would be correct for your car. All 230ies up to VIN 012466 had black lids on their ash-trays. And of course you need a new one as your car is close to mint.
 :)

All the best,

Achim

What about after that VIN?

Can I assume that since the material on the horn pad, ash tray, and window cranks all match that they are correct for my color interior?

Hello Rodd,

Good to hear from you.
Since it is more than 2 1/2 years ago that I saw your car I do not remember all the details anymore... Your car was pretty much/almost completely original as far as I remember except of the custom-made wooden front edge of your parcel shelfs and a former respray.

Anyway, to your question:
From VIN 012467 on the color of the lid on the ash-tray and the window cranks basically matched the interior color. There is an interior list which gives clear advice which color the carpet, cranks, etc. had to have for a given interior code.

The horn pad has absolutely nothing to do with the interior. There are only two colors for the steering wheel: dunkelgraphitgrau (dark graphite grey) and elfenbeinfarben (ivory colored) and the horn pads always match the wheel. Everything else is custom.

All the best to you,

Achim

Hey Achim,

Did the star in the centre of the horn pad always match the colour of the horn pad?
eg, ivory horn pad .. ivory star

Or could they be mixed as an option?

I have seen them mixed and thought it looked good and have been tempted to swap my ivory star for a black star to match the black MBTex interior of my 250sl but keep the ivory horn pad to match the ivory steering wheel.

Ivory wheels get an ivory pad. Black wheels get a black pad.

Hello Bob,

The overall-color of a given steering wheel was always uni, i.e. ivory wheel, ivory horn pad with ivory star and the same for black.
 :)
Mixtures are not original.

Here's a 230 SL for sale that looks to be pretty original. Of course, Achim was right. This car is a 1965 and it has a black ashtray. It must be one of the last black ashtray models since the change to matching colors occured towards the end of 1965.
