Ok so I put all the wires like I posted.  Put everything back together.  Not the Fuel Sender Yet but when to attach the battery the ground on the battery and it sparked.  This is the first time it has done that...  Does that mean I have have some wires shorting each other out.  Maybe getting pinched in the connector?

Unplugged the connector and tried to connect the battery.  Spark and a little smoke as soon as it touched.  Oh boy.

Man I have so many pages now with so many options.  I think this is correct if I start at the plug and put the wires like Leo's Plug.

W =>Blue / Green => Pin 4 (Fuel Reserve Light)
    => Black / Blue => Pin 5 (Fuel Gauge, +12V from Fuse)
G => Blue / Black => Pin 6 (Fuel Gauge, Fuel Sender)

Pretty sure back when, 123 recommended the red coil and no resistor (1.8 ohm?). They may have changed that based on feedback. Does omitting the resistor slowly degrade the coil? I don't know but I suppose it could.

I don't recall seeing any improvement when I switched to the 123, but rather just never had to deal with points again. But then again my dizzy was in decent shape. I DID however see an improvement going back to the 051. I checked my records and I installed the 123 in 2008, so 16 years ago (Time sure flies).

I probably should send the 123 in get it checked out to see if they find anything. Maybe one day.

Funny I got out the manual that came with my car and the wiring diagram does not show colors!  So if both of you confirm the wires in the plug I am going to fix those this morning and the wires in the plug then maybe fire it up...

Also to clear up one other thing when I had the Instrument Cluster out.  I am not sure where my brain was but the blown Bulb was the reserve light.  So that should be good now too...

Best to get this confirmed before changing the tech manual, every picture i've seen of the 12 way connector is the same, they can't all be wrong!

Need someone experienced to chime in, in case we're missing something

Wow crazy to figure this out.  I can edit the images and repost them

Its a shame you have to do this but now at least you know it will be done right. be sure to document as much as you can. it will help in the future for proof of work done via pictures / receipts etc.

What is likely going on is that the engine mounts and transmission mount have compressed and the lever is hitting the transmission support plate.

You can get the bushings from a MB dealer, PN is A1122680150, or from online sellers like Authentic Classics.

Broken record here.

The behavior with the Unisyn is exactly what I saw with air leaking past the top plates.  Or a vacuum leak somewhere else.  The running engine is demanding air and if it's not getting it through the carbs, it's coming from someplace else.  If it's not pulling air through the carbs where it would be mixed with fuel, it will go lean and backfire like you describe.

And I think you should verify TDC when the balancer and pointer are lined up.

Cheers,
