Dear all,
John Mancini has graciously supplied me with lots of interesting material, including numerous original letters of the first owner to Mercedes-Benz, for his beautiful signal red 1968 280 SL.
Additionally he's included so many pictures, that I've had to create a slide show of them. For a quick look, go here: http://www.sl113.org/featured.asp
Furthermore, I'm sure Kevin Caputo is very glad he's now finally "out of the spotlight", but not forgotten. Check the "previously featured cars" item at the bottom of the page.
Thanks John, for this great material. Everyone else who has promised me stuff, please mail me it all (in high res quality) and I'll make sure John's Pagoda doesn't remain a featured car as long as Kevins.

John,
What an interesting history to have and a joy for all to read. I think most of the rest of us desire to know the history of our cars. And, to have two of them...my oh my!
I can't imagine the hassles of ordering a car by letter and not being able to actually see one, touch one or at least visit with someone about the features.

Can the slide show be stopped so we can study each photo one at a time?

Peter,
You did a wonderful job putting together all of the photos and paperwork that I sent to you. I hope everyone enjoys the correspondence between Capt Lane and Daimler-Benz. I wonder if Mercedes-Benz, or any car manufacturer, would be that patient and gracious today?
Thanks Peter,
John

Not yet, that takes a little more time... but I'll work on it.

I had the privilege of seeing John's two beautiful cars in person and I'm glad to see them posted here. Not only are his two 280SL's beautiful but as you can see his garage is impeccable too.
Congratulations John.

After a half dozen visits to the new Feature Car, I just got past the photos of the two beautiful cars and the lovely garage they live in and finally read the narrative description.
The letters and other attached materials are rare and valuable historic documents of the purchase of a new car by a USA buyer and the responses of Mercedes. I've never seen such a complete history before.
If we ever add a "History" section to the Tech Manual, all these items should go into it. Sadly, I just noticed that we call it the "Technical" Manual so maybe it will never have historic information.

Hello John,
I was checking your options codes.
#601 is interesting.
I checked our list of options codes ( http://www.sl113.org/data/show_table.asp?table_name=usr_option_codes ) and it is not listed.
Would it be possible for you to add that code?
Thanks

Bob,
That table is out of date with the arrival of the Technical Manual (which is more accurate and more complete). Have a look at this section on option codes, 601 is indeed listed: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=DataCard.OptionCodes
I'll remove the old tables when I'm confident all data is in the Technical Manual.

Dear all,
with the new site there's a new featured cars section... Go to the Home page, then select "Content" from the menu on the left, and then "Featured Cars". Or alternatively, go here http://www.sl113.com/index.php/mar-2008.html (http://www.sl113.com/index.php/mar-2008.html) directly.
I think it's time for a new featured car... ok people, just mail me your photographs, stories, documents and background, and I'll make it into a nice story!
Peter
