Title: Used Porsche Parts
Post by: Klaus Pieper on March 18, 2022, 15:07:51
A friend of mine is looking for a used  late 1960's to early 1970's manual transmission 5 speed Porsche gear box.  Can you please advise some reliable and honest suppliers.

Regards, Klaus

I can dig up some sources here in the U.S., probably. But shipping to SA will make this not very economical. :-\

Thank you Mike, if you don't mind, any suggestions would be welcome as we are aware of the high shipping costs and also the amount of admin involved, but as they say in the classics; beggars can't be choosers. The car involved is a 356 which has been completely restored and mechanically modified and whilst testing 'stripped' the transmission.

I assume, you sorted out the bell housing requirements for a 5-speed 901 on a 4-cyl?

I have a friend with a 912 and it has a 5 speed. Is that not similar enough to work?

To embellish the story a bit more: the 60hp motor has been replaced by a 912 motor which has been reengineered and now produces an incredible 200hp. The motor is married to a gearbox from Ranchotransaxles, Fullerton, California. The drivetrain has also been extensively modified with amongst others all round disc brakes.  When road testing the Porsche, the gear box failed. A case of too much power/torque for the gear box? The gear box will be taken apart to assess the damage.  The project was always fraught with big risk and failure, but if successful, will be a highlight of my friends long motoring enthusiasts life.

I got parts for the rebuild of the transmission of my 914-6 from these guys. They may know about the availability of a whole unit. Also may recommend something fitting for the performance level:

There two other local shops I will ask.

Have you guys looked at this?:

Yeah I’d say a transmission made for a 60hp motor may get annoyed when you suddenly put 200hp on it. That’s the bad news.

The good news is the amount of aftermarket performance augmentation anything is better for Porsche than about any other marque.

Not likely to be in SA I’m afraid.
