Title: First Aid Kit
Post by: CraigD on July 02, 2011, 19:35:26
I have a first aid kit, and I'd like to ask for input from others.  My car was delivered to Switzerland, so I'd prefer to have things appropriate for this car.

1) Is this the right kit for a Euro car?  Seems like it should be in German or French or something besides English.

2) Even if it was the right kit, would you mount one?  I think they go the passenger footwell, but somehow it doesn't "fit" with the car.  Would you put one in?

I just looked at the Special Equipment catalog I have for the 1967 model line. They do have a listing for the first aid kit, and show that it was available as an option across the line. The picture shown in the catalog indicates it was to be fitted in the foot well. The kit box, is shown as black (or dark, as the photo is in black and white). The 107 cars had the kits mounted behind the seat.

Here is a photo of the kit Jonny B described. I believe my edition of the Special Equipment Catalog is for the 1966 line (still lists the 230SL) but can't say for sure. I ordered a 230SL (which later became a 250SL due to model change over) in '66 so I probably picked it up at the dealers then.

Craig, sure wish I could find my tag that used hang off the hinge in the trunk as shown in your photo. I am still finding stuff after all these years so I have not given up. Your SL looks beautiful BTW. Have you posted any other pictures?

John

John,

I like that kit better than the one I have.  I don't think I'll mount the one I have.  I'd love to get a copy of the Special Equipment Catalog... do they come up on ebay, do you think?  Let me know if you want a picture of the trunk tag.  Seems like I remember someone recreating one some time ago, but not sure.

I posted some pictures of my car here:   http://www.flickr.com/photos/craigd57/sets/72157627109809916/

And pictures of the restoration of a 2nd hardtop: http://www.flickr.com/photos/craigd57/5899466926/in/set-72157627109841740/

Let me know if you can see the pictures!

Bob Geco, a member on the site reproduces the trunk tire hang tag. You can contact him through the email here.

I found the Special Equipment catalog on ebay, these do come up from time to time.

John is correct.  I have a euro spec with the first aid kit (never used, still in plastic rap).  It is in German on front of box (white letters), A green square on right top corner with white cross, and box is black and fits exactly perfect in the black plastic mount.  I do not have it mounted, but do show it at car shows along with the emergency light that plugs in lighter socket.

I purchased this kit on ebay about 5 years ago. It looks to be "correct" but the fit in the front foot well is poor. The part number starts with 115 which is of course a 4 dr sedan. Since its complete and un-opened and "period correct" I just keep it in the trunk.

Thoughts?

Looks nice...but doesn't it look and feel a bit modern to be a 1965 or so item. Not saying it isn't correct as I don't know but if I blink look at it my immediate reaction is....that is a product made much more recently than the 60's (font, layout etc...)

Anyways its better than what I have in my trunk which is an empty space !

Darren.
