Hello All - - my eyes are bleary now from combing through the Tech Manual - - and the Interiors link - - and the Search engine results.
My quest is simple but unfulfilled!
Which model year was the last to receive the square weave carpet? My car is a '66 230SL.

Meredith's "Original Mercedes SL" (not always the most reliable source) says that loop pile carpeting was installed with "the introduction of the 280SL."

All 230SL and 250SL had German square weave. 280SLs did not.
Some 280SL owners choose to install the square weave because it is attractive and the replacement multi-loop for 280SLs is not the standard of the original carpet. Then again, the square weave does not have as many weaves (or loops) per square inch. Here is a good thread discussing this:

We know that today's multiloop is of a much lower quality than the original. What's the comparison between the original squareweave to the one available today?

The reference posting that I listed in my prior response shows photos of square weave and the loop counts per inch. I kept some of my original Cognac square weave carpet for comparison. I would call the original slightly finer/richer in appearance because it has more loops. But the new square weave is still very nice and unless you look at them side-by-side (comparing original with new Tan color), you don't really notice. I believe there is a bigger difference in some of the other colors as the reference posting shows...here I will list it again:

What's most disappointing is the lack of color choices. Although the interior charts on this forum show only a certain number of carpets listed, I have been told there were around 15 different colors originally. The Cognac shade is no longer available, which was deeper in color than the Tan shade I replaced it with.
I have never seen a comparison of original multi-loop (280SL) versus new....I have only heard of the many disappointments!
