Brown Metal Dash panel

Hello all pagoda enthusiast,

I'm looking at a SL 280 1970 model that's for sale. The exterior is red and the interior is beige, but the metal dash panel is brown. Does this mean that the car used to be brown? And how can I decode the VIN to tell me the original color of the car?

Perhaps they did a very quick paint job
on it not removing all the instruments.
The the orig. colour code number is stam-
ped on a plate in engine compartment.(left
side).

Here's a photo of the plate in the engine compartment of a 717 / Papyrus White car:

There are a couple of shades of brown, but more than likely, you'll see 423 / Tobacco Brown listed. Seems like that was the most popular shade of brown on a late-model SL.
