Ignition Coil
The ignition coil major component of the Ignition System.
Definition
The coil is a step-up transformer to provide the high voltage required for the spark plugs from the 12 volt electrical system of the car.

| 0 221 119 030 | Red Coil | 000 158 4903 | 1.8 ohm Ballast | |||
| 0 221 122 001 | 70/71 | Blue Coil | 000 158 2803 | 0.4 +0.6 Ohm ballast |
All Pagodas from 230 SL starting 9/65 upto 280 SL pre-transistorised ignition systems used the black coil in conjunction with a 0.9 ohm ballast resistor. The blue ignition coils came in with the transistorised ignitions with the control box mounted under the battery and using two resistors, a 0.4 ohm and a 0.6 ohm. Red Ignition coils with 1.8 ohm ballast resistors are used to upgrade the black coil/0.9 ohm ballast resistor to achieve a higher voltage 'hotter spark'.

Function
The funtion of the coil is to provide the high voltage to the spark plugs to fire the compressed air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. The timing of this spark is controlled by the distributor and delivered with the help of the rotor, distributor cap and high tension leads. Coils fitted to Pagodas are high performance, low resistance and must always be used with the correct specified ballast resistor(s).
Maintenance
Describe common maintenance procedures, and common faults that may occur. Describe how these may be diagnosed and resolved. Again, include diagrams, photographs and explanations. Where possible, include measures, tolerances, weights etc.
- Symptoms when it faults
- How to test if it is faulty - what tools to use
- How to fix / change
