Car stolen in Essen Germany last week
« on: April 12, 2016, 16:40:24 »
Posted on Facebook ... I am sharing it here in case anyone of you spots this car in your travels.

~~~~~~~~~ Comment by Poster ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This car was stolen in Germany Essen (Techno Classica) at the parking area of Hotel Bredeney. If you have seen anything please contact me. Its is a 280SL European model with Swedish registration. If you plan to visit Techno Classica be aware! This is not the only car stolen here!
~~~~~~~~~~ End of Posters Comment ~~~~~~~~~~~

Let's hope the car is recovered if not let us hope the owner had his car properly insured. I understand the owner took the car to Essen with the intent to sell the car.

The good news is that the car is easily identifiable due to the wrong color hubcaps. Sorry, I just couldn't resist.  ;D  (I'm sure I wasn't the only one thinking of that.)

Also, if it was insured properly, this would be a lot easier than selling it (I'm sure I wasn't the only one thinking of that comment either). .... I apologize again. I don't know what has gotten into me.
(Probably due to the fact that I drove my Pagode yesterday for the first time since November. I'm all fired up !!)

I better add the comment that I sincerely hope this person gets their car back in the same condition and those that committed this offense are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

More photos of this car here. I hope this car will be found and not reappear in pieces on the market like the case is on so many stolen cars.

Several years ago I was talking to an old gentleman who built a replica Porsche 911 - it was something like 9/10 scale and it was stolen.  The thieves cut parts of it and tried selling the pieces.  Word got around the community pretty fast about these weird sized panels and the cops were able to break up a large but un-sophisticated stolen car part ring.  The guy who stole the car was a crack head and he never noticed it was smaller than it should be.  I think most of the pieces were recovered and the car was pieced together again.  Most of the cars were put on a flatbed and hauled off - The thieves put Legit looking names and phone numbers on the trucks and even had bogus business cards to hand out to inquisitive public.

Rolf,
On Facebook, this same article was posted.   Some simply responded --valuable car---tracking device.

After a few days, and remembering that John Travolta's 280sl was also stolen, I realized more and more how valuable our Pagoda's are....and NOT monetarily speaking.

I have done a little research and so far I found an item that allows someone to track their car on their I Phone . The unit even has a "kill" switch.  I thought the group should receive (maybe even a formal announcement/reminder) about installing a GPS locator.

I would hate to see another Brother/Sister Pagoda owner lose their car....

Thanks for sharing Steven! I've seen this before.

I have my own systems to protect my Pagoda ... As well as my DD ... One of them being a sign on my garage door .........

"You might get in, but you never get out"

Others I will not talk about for obvious reasons :)

A GPS tracker can easily be defeated: http://www.jammer-store.com/gp5000-car-use-gps-jammer-blocker.html

I guess a thief can have a jammer run on its own power source. I guess he needs to run it until he finds the tracker and disables it. Or the tracker will then transmit the position again.

So what do we do if we want to go out for a dinner with the wife and leave the car?
Old fashioned alarm?

At least we can be thankful our cars are not equipped with the electronics that are going into todays cars.

Pretty soon a crook will just have to hack into the on board computer and have the car drive itself to the chop shop.  :o

So very sad to hear especially since you most likely put hundreds of hours in blood and sweat in maintaining that beautiful car
