Nice split wind screen! They may be quite rare in pick-up form. What year is it?

You clearly have more money than sense, a very tolerant Mrs, loads of space and are a dab hand with spanners!
(v cool - whack a nice 2.2 6 cylinderengine in the back and it can be your Pagoda transporter!

Or with some minor bodywork, something like this... ::)

It's a 1964. It is an ex Post Master General van so would have been red. They were especially made for Aust dusty conditions and have a larger front overhang and higher on the roof that takes in the air. It then is channeled within the cabin roof down to the rear of the cabin then under the tray to the engine bay. That way in the dust they did not have the vents low at the rear that in Euro and U.S. Models would suck in dust.

Garry,
with that high-up roof you're almost there to get the final result as shown on the photo sent by James :).

BTW I love that beetle body seating above the cabine. I gather that the 1st floor door is to allow escaping should Madame return home a bit earlier?

Let the Project begin.  Got the Single Cab Utility home today.

The VW Kombi Ute is relatively rare particularly in the USA due to a thing called the “Chicken Tax” whereby when the tax was introduced to provide some support to the US Car market, it virtually stopped the importation of commercial utility (SUV) type vehicles and thus not many Single Cab Utes in USA.

Restoration starts tomorrow. 8) 8)

Larry,

Great video. That must have been a really dry area as that Ute was in reasonable condition by the look of it.  They are hard to find, mine was not that much better than the one in the video.  I will have to cut and replace the bottom 10” vertical and 5” horizontal all round.  Luckily Kombi panels are about 1/3 the price of MB replacement panels and all other spares for that matter yet the cars are starting to get the prices of a Pagoda two years ago. Tail lights for instance are about $50 each compared to $500 if you can find NOS MB lights.  its all in the name.

See you at PUB

Now that's what I call a project - does the treasure chest have doors both sides or is it missing a panel on the drivers side and whats (or was) connected to those rear wheels -are they off a tractor?

For those who think Gary has finally lost the plot financially, ;D the iconic split screen Kombi, after a  top shelf resto have sold for $200K (Aussie) and a year or so ago  one sold in the US for north of $200K. Utes aren`t in the same category, split or not, but they are appreciating nicely, esp the splits :o

Thanks Cess.

George, the treasure chest doors for the ex PMG vehicles had the doors on both sides.  Highly unusual and after some research, I found out that they may have fitted/fixed in place, some kind of equipment like a generator in on one side and a draw set up for tools etc on the other. These VW’s were actually built in Australia especially for the Post MasterGenerals Department as repair vehicles. Some of them actually had a setup to carry lamp posts.  Dont ask me how.

It may be just a quirk in the photo as the rear wheels are standard.

Perhaps they shoved them in the treasure chest with a bit of an overhang each side ;D There was a lot less traffic about then.........
It looks like someone has started a resto and run out of puff - a word of mouth find?

George the seller is a serious VW collector

As well this one and his 55 SC Ute he had about 5 other VW various models, one a totally restored to original state 1948 VW Beetle in his shed, one of 20 in the world.  Now that was something to see. Talk about being a basic form of transport.

He had owned the 64 SC for eight years and had intended to restore it but found an earlier ’55. Over the eight years he had fiddled with it a bit to see what was needed and then purchased all the tin ware, rubbers and interior, gates etc. before deciding that he would do up the earlier one which was a real mess.  I heard that he had suggested to another person that he was thinking of selling the 64 to pay for some of the 55’s resto if they were interested but they didnt want to go through the restoration process so I asked if he would sell it to me. Rest is history.  Now I have a ’72 bay low light that I was going to keep but will sell that one once I get this one back on the road as the keeper to sit along side the ’65 230SL.  I am actually thinking of painting it in the MB 334G lower and 350H upper top half and the V front so that it matches the MB.  That way I have all the extra paint, rattle cans and touch up cans for both in the same colour.  Given that it was a PMG red all over I dont think I want to stick to that colour, it was not a pretty sight. :o

Kombi’s are a lot easier than Pagoda’s.  Simplicity at its best.

Back from Sand Blasters and some more metat to add yet but not too bad.

After having the body soda blasted, it was fitted to a rotisserie and spun over and low and behold more rust in the major cross members so new cross members fitted and the heater tube replaced that runs from engine to front cabin.

Its getting scarier every day. I have gone too far to stop now so its hang on for the ride.
