35w bulbs in Headlight Assembly

I just bought a new pair of Bosch headlight assemblies for my 64 230SL.  I installed all new bulbs in each assembly and noticed each one had a 35w bulb just above the amber turn indicator.  I've never (ever) seen these 35w bulbs illuminate in my old headlight doors, and now in the new headlight doors/assemblies, they still don't illuminate. What are the 35W bulbs for? The two 4w bulbs and indicator bulbs in each headlight door work fine

My car was delivered to Canada in May 1964 - is it possible the 35w bulbs were not intended for use in Canadian built cars?

Fog lights? Try pulling the light switch towards you, I think after you turn the main lights on so turn knob to the right. At least that,s how I think it works on my '69.

Charles' headlight doors are US-spec, but the answer is still the same.  It's foglight.  If you turn the light switch one or two notches to the right and pull out the headlight switch one notch the front fog lights will come on.  It _might_ not work if you have high beams on at same time (US requirement). 

FWIW I have NOS 35 watt bulbs in YELLOW.

well whattayaknow...yes, they're indeed foglights. By now you guys probably think I'm not "playing with a full deck" but I never realized the lightswith could be pulled out to illuminate the foglights.

That would only apply to certain late w108  and later series. All w113s and w111s for that matter with factory rear foglight had a separate pull button.

I just love it when I discover something on a car that has always been there but I had never known! In your case, discovering these lights, you must have gone 'wow! look at that!' and tried them in the dark at the 1st opportunity, tuning them on and off, just to see the difference in lighting. Or maybe it's just me and I'm still a kid at heart!

I'm like that too.  Like the first time I saw the low fuel light actually light up. 

If you want a real thrill read your owner's manual on how to push start your car with automatic transmission.  Hah.  And it works.   It actually even works on later MB automatics, at least up to my 85 300TD...

It's in the owner's manual which I don't have handy, but my recollection is it is something like turn the key to on, put car in N, roll down a hill and when you get to 25 - 30 mph move the selector into 2.  I think the instructions on the diesel cars say something the effect of "expect it to run like **** for a few minutes since the glow plugs probably are not hot".  On the gas cars it pretty much just starts the same as push-starting a manual transmission car.

An interesting note (which I may be providing with errors).  My recollection is that when Sun Valley rebuilt the transmission in my 85 300TD (722.416 transmission) this feature no longer worked as it had been disabled as part of the rebuild process.  The explanation I got was something about the secondary pump being unreliable and usually didn't work to push start the car.   Having said that, it worked just fine on my 85 300TD prior to rebuild, my 71 250C W114, my 67 250 S (280S engine), and on my 67 250SL.

I don't think this works on American auto transmissions, however I never really tried.  They certainly have never listed in in the owner's manuals as an approved starting method in any of the American cars I have owned.
