There appears to be two schools of thought on the value of of using a stencil for the hub caps. Some appear to find them fine and some hate them. ....

IMO, the problem some have with these stencils may be caused by using the wrong type. When you buy a used one on eBay you never know what you really get. The manufacturer offers 9 different types, thus, the stencil for the center star among them is different: http://www.cbs-autoteile.de/lackiersterne.html?cat=18
For a 230SL/250SL 2-piece wheel cover you must have the Type 3: http://www.cbs-autoteile.de/lackiersterne/lackierstern-typ-3.html
For a 280SL 1-piece wheel cover you need a Type 4: http://www.cbs-autoteile.de/lackiersterne/lackierstern-typ-115.html

Quote
We had horrible luck with a soft rubber type stencil once and I would not recommend it.
Dan, do you know which type you had?  Is a single experience really sufficient to blast them as useless?

As Bonnyboy typed you need to apply several thin coats at the corners - just as is shown in the company's video.

While it is tempting to use the type 4 (280SL) center star stencil on a 230SL "dog dish" hub cap the result may be disappointing since the dimensions are quite different as shown here:

Can you please sent the stencil on to Johnsnr when you have finished using it.  We are procuring a new one , thanks to the kind donation by Scott (Scottcorvette) to be held in the UK for the Europe needs, and there is one in Australia for this areas use.

Johnsnr.  Once you have finished doing your hubcaps, can you let me know and I will provide the details of the next person in needing it in the Americas.

I am in need of the Mercedes SL 250 small hub cap stencil to repaint mine.  Do you know where the "loan" stencil is now and may I borrow it next or direct me to the forum member that has it?

Thank you,
Dave

Stinchi,

Can you please contact john,  ‘johnsr’,  who is next on the list and if John can then pass it to dave, ‘dnielle’, after he is done.

The postage is the responsibility of the last user to send on to the next.  Bit of a pot luck on costs but now with stencils in USA, Europe and Australia the postage should not be too large.

Thanks to all

Hi--

Unless they became separated somehow, the North Americans have two stencils-- the large cap and the dog dish, the latter one donated by me in August. Should cover all needs, no pun intended.....

Good point Joe, and thanks for the donation of the second set for the USA.

And to users and future users, both in USA, Aust and Europe, please ensure you keep the sets together, Its hard enough tracking three sets let alone two different types of stencils.

I agree that taping is a quick and easier way to do it but to get the original look you need the mask to give the fuzzy edge to the paint job.

There are four sets, Europe, USAx2 and Australia.  They were available to Full Members only and you should send a PM to either of the two US Full Members that were listed as holding them last.

I have a set in Australia for the Asia Pacific area. I am uncertain who is holding the Euro set?

Garry,
Are you keeping a list for the masks in the Americas?
If so, can you put me on the list?
If not, just tell me and I will track the masks down with PMs.
Thanks,

No, I am just holding the masks for Australasia.   I am not sure who has the masks for Americas, Hopefully the current person will pipe up here and send them on to you as there has not been any comment for some time.

I was recently offered a late type mask with rings for both 14" and 15" (that latter being extremely rare) but the seller wanted £400!!

johnk, FYI: I never did figure out where the stencils are.
I did send a PM to johnsr (are you related  ;D  ) a couple of weeks ago with no response from him.
I am still interested in them and I would like to know exactly what we have.
If it is the hard plastic one for the center star/circle only, I am not interested.
If we have the two piece softer more rubber-like material, I would like to try it.
By the way, I will be painting the one piece later covers, not the two piece early covers.

If anyone knows where the set or sets for the Americas are, please speak up.

Thanks Joe for confirming.

Bonnyboy is next - I guess Ian will email his details for you to forward ASAP.

Then the user list in chronological order is:

Eleonard (Eric)
Mark Evans  (Mark)
Scottcorvette (Scott)

I think users should try and turnaround the mask within, say a month or move it on to the next person.

If you look back on the earlier posts, the last post that has details of who was using the USA mask was in the quotes above.  Do any of those members know or have seen the mask set?

I have the set here that I got for the UK and Euro members. I haven't used it yet...No one else has asked for it so I wonder if it may be better that I send this one to the USA to replace the missing set? It may be more in demand there.

Scott,

There were three sets.  One in Australia, I have it, one in the USofA that appears to have disappeared somewhere between the three names on the list and the third that you have.  I think the least numbers of members on a continent is Australia so if we cannot locate the US set then the set here should probably be sent to them after our search is exhausted.

Hi Garry and all,
I have now sent a PM to Mark Evans, Bonnyboy, and eleonard in an effort to find the North American stencil sets.
We should hear from them soon.
