SL107 Series

I am looking to add to my collection and the prices seems okay

1987 560 SL  asking price $ 11500 ( car seems to be in fairly good condition)
1986 560 SL asking price  $ 8750  -( car seems to be in fairly good condition)
1978 450 SL asking price  $ 7500  (fair condition)

Will inspect the cars later this week.

Any thoughts or comments

I can't remember all the reasons but a friend (past Mercedes Dealer) was looking for a SL107 and he said that the last year or two were the only ones to buy.  He said to stay away from the 70's cars at all cost.  Prices you note seem reasonable.   Based on prices out here in BC you could always get two 500sl's for the same price......Rubber mounts perish just like our cars but these cars were not nicknamed the Panzerwagon for nothing - solid cars.   Beware of the rust worm...

All 107s are old now, like pagodas. It used to be the case that post 1985 cars  were less prone to rust but that difference has faded over time and now you must simply view all cars with a suspicion of rust, especially in the bulkhead which is difficult to see.
Post 85 ones do have some mechanical improvements over the predecessors but all have their charms.
If you feel inclined to buy in the UK I have a very nice low mileage  LHD 500SL for sale but it is more than your stated budget.

In my view the r107 500SL is the best one. It is the "sister" of the 450SLC 5.0/500SLC which was developed to homolgate the rallye version of these cars. Engine is alloy instead of iron, hood and trunk are aluminum, rear control arms are also aluminum. The engine is fitted with the early K-jet with no electronics and the exhaust is the tri-Y system. The 500SL like the 500SLC has the later four speed automatic transmission. Later 560SLs are less "sporty", though the have retained some of the improvements.

I just met a fellow here in London, Ontario, who bought a very nice 1986 560SL three years ago for CDN$10,000. The dealer had advertised the car for $23,000, so that's quite a markdown.

Real bargains because they made so many of these for many years. There is a huge variety of engines and other features. Do your research. The W107 series includes a 280SL,  300SL. 350SL, 380SL, 420SL 450SL,  500SL, 560SL also the 350SLC, 380SLC 450SLC, and the 500SLC  .   Unfortunately, all except the early W107s  sold in the US had the large ugly rubber safety bumpers. European delivery cars had the more desirable small chrome bumpers.  There is also a wide variation in horsepower. The mid 70s US emission models V-8s were hard on fuel, only 175 hp,had a catalytic converter were heavy and more complex.
The series was one of the most successful sports cars ever, with over a quarter million units produced. Models with the cast iron v-8s were heavy handling compared to the six cylinder and aluminum V-8s.  Some were available with four or five speed transmissions.  Don't dis-regard the six cylinders which were very responsive and lighter handling.  One of the most desirable and hardest to find is the 300SL in the W107 chassis. "85-89".  It had a modern 192 hp straight six cylinder engine and could be had with a five speed std. transmission. However only 13,000 units were produced, so these could be hard to find.  The 500SL (alumn.V-8) was the fastest with 240 hp and 7.4 zero to sixty time. The early version 350SLs are also desirable. They were simpler with very little emission devices and had the pretty early small chrome bumpers.
The ones to stay away from are the mid 70s US emission models with the cast iron V-8s.  In general the V-8s are hard on gas and a little heavy handling.  The six cylinders are very popular but never sold new in the US. Problem areas are the US Climate Control systems, US 380SLs with single row timing chains and rust from cold salty winters.

I like the earliest,  the six cylinders  the 500SLs and 560SLs, especially the 300SL.  The models with the small chrome bumpers look the best. Do your research on this model there is quite a variety to choose from

Finally decided to postpone the idea of buying the 107. Will focus on driving and enjoying the Pagoda and the MG TD.

Nirmal, good idea! Make your Pagoda as perfect as your wallet allows and you will love it even more :)
