Pagoda Wrist Watch
« on: April 05, 2014, 21:38:08 »
Hi all,
I am looking for a new spare watch, as my Oris needs another service, and
it was away 2 months last time !
Does anyone know of a "Pagoda" style watch,
I know Mercedes do a 300SL style one, which I may buy if
I cannot find a Pagoda one .
Thanks

Here is a vendor. I have one of these, and I am pleased with it, great fun at M-B gatherings. Reasonably priced IMHO. However, it is not a "high street super quality" item, it is basic.

Hi Hans,
that's a really cute watch face. If I knew how to deal with eBay vendors, I would suggest we take orders here and buy a bunch of them.

here us a watch that looks even more like "Pagoda-like".

http://www.sls-hh-shop.de/en/230-280SL-W113/99-a-Accessories/Armbanduhr-Tacho-Design-W113-280SL.html

Although this is a 280 type, I saw that some sites of German clubs offer also the 230 and 250 types.

BTW... one of the ideas Peter mentioned in the past was that he was in discussion with a supplier about a Pagoda SL dedicated watch.

Hi,
the first watch mentioned above is a very cheap one. I myself bought one, it works but it looks very cheap.
There are several more superior ones, e.g.

great choice indeed. The first link shows the Star watch editions, where the Edition 230 is supposed to correspond to the Pagoda tacho. However, as it is a 230 Edition, shouldn't it be scaled up to 210 km and not 220?

BTW, the Bergmann watches are also offered scaled in miles

Paul, Good choice! Hope some day you can add a 300SL to go with it :)

52 years ago my wife purchased for me a TUDOR watch as a first year wedding anniversary gift at that time the price was around $350- (I do recall it resulted in one of our first arguments - for her getting such a gift), anyway a few years back I had the watch appeased in and the value now is around $14,000- .... Goes to show what a beating the mighty dollar has taken as time went on.

I wonder what your new watch will be worth in 50 years :)

The question is what will be the appreciation curve of your Tudor watch against that of Pagoda. If you know the answer, then go for it.
Another question is to know who will benefit from that appreciation, if any. Seems like.... not us :( :( :(

Stan, I would say that if the Tudor continues to increase in price as it did in the past then the Tudor will come out on top hands down. Also the watch was a low maintenance item compared to a Pagoda over the same time period. My estimate for maintaining the watch over that period of time was approx $1800- and change (cleaning, parts, new crystals [i wear mine every day and it got scratched a few times] had to get a new bracelet also. Now maintenance and parts to maintain a Pagoda over the same period of time would have been plenty more, then the fun one has with a Pagoda is of course priceless ... To me anyway :)

Lovely to have such an original watch and all its good personal history.
I think Tudor and Rolex were originally founded by the same  owners in the 1900s.

I do not hold out hope for a similar value increase in my latest purchase !
Keep Well
