Horneland rally

Last weekend I navigated the Horneland Rally in Belgium, together with a friend in a 1966 MGB. Lots of Healey's, Alfa Romeo's and Porsche 911's in attendance, but no Mercedes at all.

Peter, looks like a lot of fun.  In the second picture, are you on the floor of an old quarry?

Jordan, indeed, yes. Not that old, it was still operational further down the road. The produce Belgian Hardstone, also known as Bluestone. I happen to have that as my kitchen floor...

How dare you advertising no Mercedes in the rally since you left yours behind at home. Nor only could you have saved the appearances, but by the same token you would grant yourself the exclusivity :D

BTW blue is your Pagoda, bluestone in your kitchen... coincidence or a voluntary choice?

Peter, looks like you had great fun :) I see you made sure you you were ready for the task fuelling up with that hot coffee for the trip :)

When asking Peter how well did he do, please be more precise to state in which category.

Otherwise I would start to suspect that you are referring to ugly allegations made by R=D ;D

How well did we do...

On the first night, we got 3 penalty points, and were 11th out of 80 in the Expert class. We were very pleased.
Friday morning we did extremely well, and got 0 penalty points and ended up 3rd overall. We knew it wouldn't last...
In the afternoon and evening, incompetence, old age (needing reading glasses for navigation is a big handicap), and darkness (our starting number was #75, meaning that we were starting 75 minutes behind #1, and ended up driving in the dark for almost one-and-a-half hours longer than those with low starting numbers) meant that we missed a few controls. We got 46 penalty points and ended up as 17th by the end of Friday.

Saturday they threw me another curve ball. Two sections were driven on maps from the 1950's. As you can imagine, many roads have been added since and some have been changed. We had great difficulty finding one control (I was lost) and got 19 minutes of penalties (i.e. another 19 points). We also missed some controls. So overall we ended up 20th.

However, I rally relatively infrequently compared to some of the real experts, who probably navigate and drive a rally each week. We left some of those repeat offenders behind us in the list, so both driver and I were relatively happy with the end result...

Dear Stan .... There was nothing at all "ugly" about my comment I saw the coffee cup in Peter's hand and said to myself there is a real rally driver that knows that a good cup of coffee will see him thru the task ahead ... :)
