Injector pump lubrication
« on: June 13, 2011, 13:10:58 »
Hello
So I just realized from getting educated by clicking around the tech manual that the injector pump needs to be lubricated.  Early cars have built in reservoir, and later cars use engine oil already in the system.  I saw the picture on how to spot the difference by where the line comes out of the unit.  I have a 67 230sl, only 180 made before the switch over to the 250.  Is my car early or late?  If early, how do I check the level and fill.  With what, 10w30?

Thanks Glenn
When I'm at the computer, I'm not near the car.  I'll check for the obvious.  I guess I've been called worse than a dipstick!
You know, the modern Benz's don't have dipsticks.  If you want one, it's $169 from the dealer.

Yours would have a dipstick, I do, and my car is newer, '67 250 SL.  You need to remove the dipstick, suck the existing oil out and replace with your recommended motor oil checking the dipstick to be sure you do not overfill.  Overfilling will result in, I think, a richer mixture, but I'm not sure.  I do know that overfilling changes the mixture.

The dipstick can be hard to turn by hand and you may need a tool, long pliers, etc.  It is a bit clumsy.

A stubby 14mm wrench works well on the dipstick.  Also, be sure to have a pan under the pump when you remove the dipstick because there is an excellent chance that your pump is over-full of oil from tired seals, which will gush out.
