Go To Top Of PageCreating a Hyperlink in your message

You can easily add a hyperlink to your message.

All that you need to do is type the URL (http://www.sl113.org/forums/), and it will automatically be converted to a URL (http://www.sl113.org/forums/)!

The trick here is to make sure you prefix your URL with the http://, https:// or file://

You can also add a mailto link to your message by typing in your e-mail address.

This Example:
admin@sl113.org
Outputs this:
admin@sl113.org

Another way to add hyperlinks is to use the [url]linkto[/url] tags

This Example:
[url]http://www.sl113.org/forums/[/url] takes you home!
Outputs This:
http://www.sl113.org/forums/ takes you home!

If you use this tag: [url="linkto"]description[/url] you can add a description to the link.

This Example:
Take me to [url="http://www.sl113.org/forums/"]Pagoda SL Forums[/url]
Outputs This:
Take me to Pagoda SL Forums
This Example:
If you have a question [url="admin@sl113.org"]E-Mail Me[/url]
Outputs This:
If you have a question E-Mail Me

You can make clickable images by combining the [url="linkto"]description[/url] and [img]image_url[/img] tags
This Example:
[url="http://www.sl113.org/forums/"][img]top_title2.gif[/img][/url]
Outputs This:

All of the pages that require you to identify yourself with your Username and Password carry a "lost Password" link that you can use to have a code e-mailed instantly to your e-mail address of record that will allow you to create a new password. Because of the Encryption that is used for your password, we cannot tell you what your password is.

Go To Top Of PageCan I be notified by e-mail when there are new posts?

Yes, the Subscription feature allows you to subscribe to Forums or Topics, depending on the Administrator's settings. You will receive an e-mail notifying you of a post that has been added to the Forum orTopic that you have subscribed to. There are four levels of subscription:

- Board Wide Subscription
Due to the numerous e-mail messages that would be generated, subscriptions at this level are Not Permitted.

- Category Wide Subscription
Subscriptions at the Category level are Not Permitted.

- Forum Wide Subscription
Subscriptions at the Forum Level are Not Permitted

- Topic Wide Subscription
You can subscribe to individual topics. You will be notified by e-mail when a mesage is added to a subscribed topic.
Each level of subscription is optional. The administrator can turn On/Off each level of subscription for each Category/Forum/Topic.
To Subscribe or Unsubscribe at any level of subscription, you can use the "My Subscriptions" link, located near the top of each page to manage your subscriptions. Or you can click on the subscribe/unsubscribe icons (Subscribe UnSubscribe) for that Category/Forum/Topic you want to subscribe/unsubscribe to/from.

Go To Top Of PageWhat does it mean if a forum has Moderation enabled?

Moderation: This feature allows the Administrator or the Moderator to "Approve", "Hold" or "Delete" a users post before it is shown to the public. Note: The Moderation setting is not used on these forums.
Approve: Only the administrators or the moderators will be able to approve a post made to a moderated forum. When the post is approved, it will be made viewable to the public.

Go To Top Of PageUploading and inserting Pictures

This section explains how to upload and create in-line pictures in your posts. When images are placed in-line in a forum message we want to make sure that:

  • these pictures are hosted on our own site, with reasonable sizes and limits on file size. This ensures that these pictures are always available when our server is
  • these pictures are reasonable in display size (maximum dimension is 640 pixels, either horizontally or vertically)
  • these pictures are less than 256K in size (but smaller is better) so that even dial-up modem visitors can see them in a reasonable amount of time.

Process for putting pictures in your post

The general process for putting pictures in your post is actually quite simple and not too dissimilar from the normal process most of you are familiar with today. For the sake of new users and in order to reach optimum quality I shall repeat some of these steps here. I apologise in advance if this is too familiar to you. The general process, for which I'll describe each step in detail, is as follows:
  • edit the picture to reduce its size
  • upload the picture in your post
  • edit your post manually to get the picture to show in the text.

Editing your picture

The typical photograph, taken with your digital camera, is between 2 and 6MB large. That is far too big to show in a forum message. Most people view forum messages on a screen either 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels. A universally applicable maximum display size for a picture is therefore to make the largest side (either vertical or horizontal, depending on picture orientation) 640 pixels. Frequently the other side will end up being 425 or 480 pixels, or something close to that. This is an excellent size for our forum.

Just by doing this, picture size will be reduced dramatically. Use your favourite software to save your picture as a ".jpg" file, and verify its size. Sometimes you can do this in your editing package, sometimes you need to right-click on "Your computer" or "My Pictures" to verify that size. If it is over 256K you need to further reduce that size. The easiest way is to perform a "Save As..." operation on the original file, and then to select an Image quality of say 60% (or 6 out of 10) or smaller to reduce the size below 256K. The smaller the percentage, the better.

Note that this jpg compression process typically leaves a better image than if you try to achieve the same result in another fashion. These operations can be performed using Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Photo Editor, the GIMP and other packages. If you use Windows and need an excellent free-of-charge package, I recommend XnView.

This package is easy to use and leaves camera information in the .jpg file intact in editing sessions. When using the "Save As..." function select the button "Options" and then use the JPEG quality lever to fit within the 256K (but smaller is acceptable). Set the image quality or file size lever to something like 6, 7 or 8. A good compromise between quality and size.

Using XNView to make smaller images

On Xnview... what we recommend to do is this:
  1. select the picture
  2. Crop to just the area of interest (get rid of borders and background). Use:
    • Edit / Set Selection Ratio 3:2 (gets you nice rectangular selection)
    • Select the area
    • To flip between horizontal and vertical orientation use TAB
    • Move the selection window until you have just what is needed
    • Then do Edit / Crop (or CTRL-Y)
  3. Now you have the area of interest. If you need to do any colour, sharpness or other fixes, do them now. Just experiment.
  4. Now make sure the longest side is something like 640 or 800 pixels, depending on the amount of detail and size of the picture needed. Do that using Image / Resize. Make sure "Keep Ratio" is checked, and change the largest value (either X or Y) to the required number of pixels.
  5. Note, if that means you are increasing the size... don't do it, you'll lose detail.
  6. Press the "Save As" button or use File / Save As. Save as a .jpg file. See notes below on naming your file.

Naming your picturefile

To ensure that you have no poblems in uploading and later referring to your picture, save your picture as file type JPG. Do not use "spaces" in the filename, or any other characters than letters, numbers and underscores "_". They will give problems.

Uploading your picture

Ensure that you have disabled your pop-up blocker in the browser for this web-site.

Edit your post. Then press the paperclip icon and in the resulting dialog box upload your file, and press the button "upload to ...'s post". A window appears with the following information:

The following file has been successfully received:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Filename PvE_Garage.jpg
 Extension .jpg
 Size 77.75 KB
 Link uploaded/vanesp/200637173426_PvE_Garage.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please click here to close this window.
Click the close button.

In your post a text appears with the following information (provided the file size is ok):

[b]Download Attachment:[/b]
[url="http://www.sl113.org/forums/uploaded/vanesp/200637173426_PvE_Garage.jpg" ]
[img]images/icon_paperclip.gif[/img] PvE_Garage.jpg[/url][br]77.75 KB
This is the code for the normal way of showing a picture by downloading it.

Mozilla, Firefox and Safari

Users of these browsers have reported that after uploading a file the confirmation window appears, but that the text is not copied into your post after pressing the Close button. If you use any of these browsers, select the Link in the confirmation window, and copy (with CTRL-C) and paste (with CTRL-V) it into your message text. Then add the URL tags and the preamble manually, so that it looks like the text in the message shown above -- or the in-line example below, and you are good to go. Alternatively, use Internet Explorer.

Putting your picture in-line

You can put your picture in line with the text of your message by editing the upload message to look like this:

[img]http://www.sl113.org/forums/uploaded/vanesp/200637173426_PvE_Garage.jpg[/img]
In other words: don't change the picture's URL (which is assigned by our software), and get rid of the Download text and other tags, but keep the URL of the image as provided by the upload command and include it in IMG tags as shown above.
